Garage Door Spring Repair - if your vehicle is trapped in your garage or if your garage door is jammed open. Extension spring Vs Torsion spring

Torsion spring Vs Extension spring

  • Torsion springs are mounted on a metal shaft above the garage door opening. They are wound tight with tension and, when the door is opened, this tension is released, causing the springs to unwind and lift the door. Torsion springs are typically more durable and have a longer lifespan than extension springs, but they require more force to lift the door and can be more dangerous to repair or replace.

  • Extension springs are mounted on either side of the garage door, running parallel to the horizontal tracks. When the door is opened, the springs stretch and provide the lifting force needed to raise the door. Extension springs are generally less powerful than torsion springs and have a shorter lifespan, but they are easier to repair or replace.

It's critical to maintain garage door springs properly to guarantee the

door will open and close securely. This entails routinely inspecting the

springs to look for wear or damage indicators like cracks, rust, or uneven

tension. It is best to have the springs professionally repaired or replaced if any problems are found.

So by the end of the day, garage door springs are an essential component of a garage door system because they supply the force required to lift the heavy door. For the door to operate securely and dependably, proper upkeep and routine inspection of the springs are essential.

What happens when a garage door spring breaks?

When the spring breaks in your garage door, you will be unable to operate your garage door like usual. The problem might be a broken spring if:

  • The garage door opener motor is running but the door isn’t moving.

  • You can hear the garage door opener trying and failing to lift the door.

  • You heard the spring break, making a loud pop noise.

  • The garage door is off its tracks.

Is it possible to open a garage door with a broken spring?

A garage door can still open if the spring is broken, but it will take some manual effort. Using your garage door opener could burn out the motor since the broken spring makes the garage door heavier.

We recommend not attempting to open your garage door if it has a broken spring. Follow these safety tips if you must open the door to get a car out:

  • Keep yourself safe by protecting your back, keeping your fingers away from pinch points, and ensuring your feet aren’t under the door.

  • Lift the door from the center and keep it level as the door goes up.

  • Do not push or pull on the garage door panels, as they could bend.

  • The garage door will not stay open without support so keep the door level when it’s open.

  • Shut the garage door immediately after getting your car out — do not keep it open.

IMPORTANT TIPS:  * Always replace both springs at once!

* Don't over-tighten the set screws on torsion cones and cable pulleys.

Hand-tighten the set screws until they make contact with the torsion tube and tighten 3/4 of a turn!

Can I replace the spring by myself?

Can I replace the spring by myself?

garage door broken spring - Since special equipment is required, you won't save a lot of money doing it yourself, and it can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, it's usually best to hire a professional. Before doing any repair, disconnect the power to the garage door motor. To secure the door while you operate, you must clamp it to the track; you should do this with each track that is attached to the door. Unlock the nuts and bolts on the spring brackets to gain access to it, and then measure their length and diameter when it is completely relaxed. Order a replacement spring from the manufacturer; you may have to scour the secondary market to obtain the exact spring you require. Place the spring over the tube and secure it by tightening the cones on the middle bracket and torsion tube.

How to replace a broken garage door spring

  1. Add the cable drum and slide the left spring onto the tube. When your replacement springs arrive, place the new left spring (the one with the end facing up and to the left) on the torsion tube with the cone facing the middle bracket. Replace the cable drum and insert the torsion bar into the left bearing bracket after installing the new spring.

  2. Install the center bearing and correct spring before securing the cones. Slide the torsion bar to the left position, then install the center bearing. Slide the correct spring onto the bar, then press the bearing into the cone. Connect both stationary cones to the center bracket using the previously removed nuts and bolts. Remove the clamp or locking pliers from the middle bracket.

  3. Wind the cables onto the drums and tighten them. Connect the lift cable to the roller and doorjamb. Insert the lift cable stop through the drum's cable hole. Attach locking pliers to the torsion tube in order to secure it. Turn the drum so that the cable is wound into the grooves, and then tighten the set screws. Repeat on the opposite side, retaining the locking pliers. * For the door to operate properly, all sides must have the same amount of tension, therefore tighten each side evenly.

  4. Rotate the springs. Insert two winding bars perpendicular to each other into the winding cone. Utilize the bars to turn the spring a quarter turn at a time, transferring the bars to fresh cone holes as needed. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the number of turns to finish. Repeat with the opposite spring.

  5. Generally, 30 quarter-turns are required for a 7-foot (2.1-meter) door and 36 quarter-turns are required for an 8-foot (2.4-meter) door.

  6. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and refrain from overwinding the spring, since doing so could cause it to snap and cause you injury.

  7. Extend the springs by 14 inches (0.64 cm). When the spring is entirely coiled, leave one winding bar in a floor-perpendicular slot of the cone. Hammer the winding bar to extend the spring 14 inch (0.64 cm) from its center. Continue on the reverse side.

  8. Adjust the set screws. Utilizing your fingers, tighten each set screws until it makes contact with the torsion tube. Then, tighten each screw another half to three-quarters of a turn. Once the screws meet the torsion tube, make sure to tighten them by less than one complete revolution to prevent distorting or puncturing the tube.

  9. Grease the springs. Protect the garage door by sliding a paper bag or a piece of cardboard behind the spring. Apply garage door lubrication to each spring. Remove any excess, then repeat the procedure on the other side.

  10. Put away the clamps and pliers. Remove the clamps or pliers used to secure the torsion bar and the garage door itself.

  11. Test the door's functionality and reconnect the opener. Raise the door approximately 3 feet (0.91 m) in the air and release it. If it remains in place, the task was successfully completed. If not, add a quarter turn to each spring. If required, test the door again and add another ¼  turn. Once you are pleased, reconnect the garage door opener.
